Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor: The Plaza Mayor used to be the center of Madrid. Tens of thousands of people would gather there to watch bullfighting, see theater, or even watch the publicly held judgments passed down by the Spanish Inquisition. Today, you'll find shops selling traditional Spanish arts and crafts, jewelry, hand-painted silks, glass and leather purses. Everything is handcrafted and one-of-a-kind. Surrounding the plaza is a series of archways that lead to shopping arcades and streets lined with old-fashioned storefronts and restaurants. This is definitely Madrid at its most charming.
Chocolaterías: Chocolaterías sell one of Spain's most decadent desserts: churros and hot chocolate. Churros are long, perfectly golden, fried dough pieces, and while you may think you've had good hot chocolate, nothing compares to that served in Madrid. You can drink it, but most people take their churro and dip. The hot chocolate gets absorbed into all the little nooks and crannies of the fried dough, so when you take a bite, you get a delicious burst of chocolate in your mouth!
Puerta del Sol: Located in the center of Madrid, the Puerta del Sol is the hub of the city's transportation system. Locals are always streaming into the area, and visitors begin their tours there, because all of the streets jut out from the plaza. There's always an energy and excitement in the air. For instance, Puerta del Sol is where people gather to celebrate New Year's Eve. They mark the countdown by eating grapes for good luck - 12 in total, one for each month in the new year.
La Barraca: You would never know how beautiful La Barraca is from the street. It's just charming, and is said to serve some of the best paella in Madrid. Saffron gives paella its beautiful color (interestingly, saffron is more expensive than silver per ounce). Paella takes about 30 minutes to cook, so be prepared for a long, leisurely lunch. The best thing to do is order some starters, a full bottle of wine, and say to yourself, "Welcome to Spain!"
Parque del Buen Retiro. The Parque del Buen Retiro was built in the 17th century as a retreat for royalty only. It was eventually opened to the public in 1868, and it has been beloved by the people of Madrid ever since. The 350-acre park is an absolute oasis. It has tree-lined paths, promenades and all sort of activities. You can take a rowboat on an artificial lake, or you can check out an exhibit at the Crystal Palace. A fountain on the grounds is said to be one of the only statues in the world dedicated to the devil.
Corpus Christi Convent: Madrid is definitely a walking city, and sometimes traveling off the beaten path will reward you with hidden treasures like the Corpus Christi Convent. It's one of several convents throughout Spain where the nuns bake and sell wonderful cookies and cakes. Just ring the doorbell, enter the convent and place your order at the torno - a "Lazy Susan" device. You don't have any physical contact whatsoever with the nuns, but it's a great experience! And don't forget: it's always appropriate to leave a tip.
